Specifications for Bermuda and Cool Season Sod Grounds Preparation and Repair

 

Section 1 - General

1.1 Introduction: The purpose of this document is to provide specifications for repairs made to OSU grounds and turfgrass areas. Landscape Services will provide specific details for turf selection, irrigation, soil preparation, finish grade and turfgrass installation.

 

Section 2 - Bermuda Sod specifications

2.1 Sod shall be dense, healthy, field grown with grass having been mowed at 1-2 inches in height before lifting from the field.

2.2 Sod shall be free of disease, weeds and harmful insects and have no contamination of other grass varieties.

2.3 Sod shall be cut to have an even soil blanket of ½ inch minimum attached to the grass roots.

2.4 All sod rolls shall be continuous and untorn. Sod to be cut in such a manner as to insure that the rolls will not tear or separate during the installation process.

2.5 All rolls to be cut 18 inches in width.

2.6 If only delivering sod and not installing - small rolls only, we do not have the equipment to roll out sod.

 

Section 3 - Fescue Sod

3.1 Sod shall be dense, healthy, field grown with grass having been mowed at 2-3 inches in height before lifting from the field.

3.2 Sod shall be free of disease, weeds and harmful insects and have no contamination of other grass varieties.

3.3 Sod shall be cut to have an even soil blanket of ½ inch minimum attached to the grass roots.

3.4 All sod rolls shall be continuous and untorn. Sod to be cut in such a manner as to insure that the rolls will not tear or separate during the installation process.

3.5 All rolls to be cut 18 inches in width.

3.6 Grass varieties are to be turf type fescues, ryes, and bluegrasses. Sod may be of mixed varieties. Bid to state grass types, varieties, and percent of each mix. Grass varieties will be a factor in the bid evaluation.

 

Section 4 - Soil Prep/ Finish Grade Prior To Installation

4.1 Area shall be free of debris.

4.2 Area shall be hand raked. Removal of all rocks and clods larger than 3/8” from installation area and site.

4.3 Any debris shall be hauled off site.

4.4 Area next to concrete must have a reduced elevation to allow for the sod thickness to tie into the top of the concrete. Sod thickness is ½”.

4.5 Area will be smooth throughout and have no humps, ruts or depressions that hold water. Area will be graded for accurate surface drainage with a minimum of 2% slope. Surface drainage exit points will be determined by landscape services.

4.6 Maximum slope grade of 5:1.

 

Section 5 - Laydown Yard/ Project Disturbance Repair Specifications         

5.1 Areas used for laydown are to be returned to original conditions. All debris will be removed prior to removal of turf. The damaged area will be stripped of sod at a depth of ½” inch with a sod cutter. Area will be stripped 5 feet outside the disturbed area to allow sufficient space to tie into existing grade.

5.2 Soil is to be added or removed to restore original/ improved grade. Improved grade for surface drainage will be determined by landscape services prior to repair.

5.3 Sod spoils to be disposed of by contractor off site unless prior approval of disposal on OSU property is given by landscape services.

5.4 Material hauled in for parking will be excavated to a depth free of material hauled in.

5.5 Fill material will be determined by landscape services. Fill material will be free of any aggregate, weeds, turfgrass and any other objects/ debris.

5.6 Area is to be de-compacted by tilling the soil.

5.7 Debris exposed during the restoration process is to be removed from site.

5.8 Contractor is responsible for cleanup of all spilled material removed from the project. Any debris on sidewalks, streets or turfgrass areas outside the project area must be cleaned immediately.

5.9  Any mud or clods tracked outside of project area will be cleaned by contractor.

5.10 Irrigation damaged or removed will be replaced. Estimates will be provided by OSU on-call contractor.

5.11 Materials from project construction are to be removed from site. Brick, stone, concrete, metal or any other material used for construction are to be removed from site. No burial of any material on site.

 

Section 6 - Installation Specifications

6.1 KWMI big roll installer or equivalent rubber track machines are required. The machines used to install big rolls must be in mechanical order with no leaks. Any leaks will be at the contractor’s expense to clean.

6.2 Sod to be installed per industry recognized standards. These standards include but not limited to; all rolls to be butt jointed on both ends and edges. Small rolls installed in a brick pattern. No gaps between rolls will be allowed, no lapping joints allowed, no torn or damaged rolls will be installed.

6.3 Ruts or tracks created during installation are to be raked out before covering with sod.

6.4 Vendor to roll sod after installation with water filled roller or mechanical roller to insure proper soil contact. Small trimmings of sod will not be used to fill in areas greater than half the width of a roll or along the edge of the sodded area.

6.5 Netting shall be removed from all big rolls on OSU campus and disposed of off property at contractor’s expense.

6.6 Sod will be cut in or around sprinkler heads, drains, valve boxes or any other permanent structures within the sodded area. Left over scraps are to be removed and disposed of off property at contractor’s expense. There is not be no trash from contractor left on property.

6.7 Contractor is responsible for watering sod without irrigation. Contractor will water sod daily to complete saturation for 7 consecutive days.

 

Section 7 - General Specifications

7.1 All sod to be delivered to designated site on the OSU Stillwater campus within 24 hours of harvesting. There may be one or more delivery drops on the campus. Bids should include delivery price with vendor supplies fork lift for unloading purposes.

7.2 Sod will be installed within 24 hours of delivery. Any sod not installed after 24 of delivery will be rejected.

7.3 Sod received that is damaged, discolored, or has less than ½” of attached soil will be rejected.
