RHA Eco-Reps

What is an RHA Eco-Rep?

RHA Eco-Reps are student residents who have a passion for helping OSU Housing and Residential Life become more sustainable. Eco-Reps volunteer their time to be student leaders of sustainability in their Res Halls. They promote sustainable practices, raise awareness about sustainability issues, and encourage adopting environmentally conscientious behaviors among their fellow residents. Eco-Reps are managed by the RHA VP for Sustainability.

What are some goals of this program?

  • Serve as a resource to RHA entities such as Programming Board and Board of Directors on sustainable programming
  • Train Eco-Reps to be peer educators and student leaders in campus housing for environmental and sustainability issues.
  • Educate Eco-Reps to be proactive change agents who empower residential community members to live more sustainably on campus.
  • Promote resource conservation and stewardship through outreach and educational programs in residential communities.
  • Decrease waste and increase recycling in the campus housing, including reducing recycling contamination.
  • Decrease energy and water use in the residential communities.

What have RHA Eco-Reps done in the past to better their Res Halls?

In 2017, the Eco-Reps utilized GSI (Green Student Initiative) award funding to buy 600 small, personal recycling bins for student residents to check out through roompact.com for use in their dorms. In 2018, the roompact.com loan program was phased out, and several halls were selected for pilot programs: Bost, Iba, Village B & West Commons. In 2019, Eco-Reps distributed Freshmen Kits, conducted programming in residences and participated in Homecoming Harvest Carnival, Recycle Sorting Facility Tours, and America Recycles Day.  RHA Eco-Reps have applied for a 2020 GSI to fund recycling totes for more residents.
